The Space Between Knowing and Leading - What Greek Mythology Taught Me About Modern Leadership
There’s a moment every leader recognises. You’re faced with a situation that doesn’t have a clear answer. The playbook doesn’t quite fit.
And the pressure to appear certain is high.
For years, I believed leadership meant having the answer.
It was only much later standing in places like Delphi in Greece where the ancients went not for answers, but for interpretation that I began to see leadership differently.
Because the Greeks didn’t worship certainty.
They respected insight, perspective, and the discipline of thinking well. And that may be exactly what modern leadership is missing.
Athena, Not Zeus: From Authority to Wisdom
In mythology, Zeus ruled with power. But it was Athena, the goddess of wisdom and strategy who was sought in moments of complexity.
Too many leaders still default to Zeus:
Assert control
Project certainty
Drive decisions quickly
However, today’s challenges don’t respond well to force. They require clarity of thought. The shift is subtle:
From “I have the answer”
To “Let’s understand this properly”
That’s not hesitation.
That’s leadership maturing.
Odysseus and the Reality of Behaviour
If leadership was purely intellectual, change would be easy. But it isn’t.
In The Odyssey, Odysseus doesn’t struggle because he lacks knowledge. He struggles because the journey tests his behaviour:
Temptation
Fatigue
Ego
Distraction
Sound familiar?
Modern leaders don’t fail through lack of insight. They falter when pressure exposes their default patterns. That’s why real development isn’t about learning more - it’s about:
Practising new responses
Catching yourself in the moment
Choosing differently when it matters
Because leadership is revealed in behaviour, not theory.
The Myth of the “Standard Leader”
There is no single archetype of leadership. The Greeks understood this well. Apollo represented logic, order, and clarity. Dyonysus represented instinct, emotion, and unpredictability.
Both were necessary.
Yet much of modern leadership development still tries to standardise:
One model
One pathway
One definition of “good”
But leadership isn’t uniform - it’s contextual. The real question is: “What does this situation require of me - now?”
And often, the answer lies in balancing opposing strengths, not choosing one.
Escaping the Echo Chamber
One of the most dangerous places for a leader is a room where everyone thinks the same. The Greeks had a word for a kind of disruptive, truth-telling voice: parrhesia - the courage to speak openly. In today’s world, that kind of challenge is rare. Leaders often operate within:
Industry norms
Organisational politics
Familiar perspectives
And over time, thinking narrows. But insight rarely comes from an agreement, it comes from contrast. From someone who sees what you can’t. From outside your world. From beyond your assumptions.
What This Means for Leaders Today
If there’s one thread that runs from ancient Greece to modern leadership, it’s this:
The quality of your leadership is shaped by the quality of your thinking and the courage to act on it.
Not perfectly.
But deliberately.
The Book: The Power Within
Over the past year, I’ve been writing a book that brings these ideas together. Not as history, but as practical leadership insight drawn from ancient wisdom. The Power Within explores how mythological archetypes Zeus, Athena, Odysseus, Apollo and others mirror the internal tensions every leader faces:
Control vs clarity
Knowledge vs behaviour
Logic vs instinct
Certainty vs curiosity
Much of this book was written in Greece itself, walking through Athens, Crete, and Delphi - places where these ideas were first explored thousands of years ago. It will be published in the Autumn.
And if there’s one thing I’ve come to believe, it’s this:
Leadership isn’t about becoming someone else, it’s about understanding - and mastering - what’s already within you - The Power Within
A Final Reflection
The strongest leaders I’ve worked with don’t lead with certainty. They lead with:
Curiosity
Awareness
And the discipline to take the next step, even when the full path isn’t clear
In many ways, that’s what the Greeks were pointing to all along.
Not perfection.
But progress, guided by wisdom.
